Maid abuse : Mum, son jailed

<!-- by line --> By Elena Chong
<!-- story content : start -->
A MOTHER and her son were jailed on Tuesday after they were convicted of abusing their Indonesian domestic worker in 2007. Munirah Abdullah, 47, a divorced mother of four, had accused the maid, Ms Luluk Wiji Utami, 30, of stealing her money at her Sengkang flat on Feb 17, 2007. When her son, auxiliary police officer Mohamed Sirat Abu, 27, came home that evening, the maid was called to the room and grilled. Both then slapped and kicked the victim. They also held her by the hair and swung her head.

The next day, Munirah again questioned the victim about the missing money. When the maid denied stealing, she punched her in the left eye. The third day, Munirah used a spatula to hit the maid on the arms until it broke as she was unhappy that the victim did not clean one of the fans in the flat. She then used the broken spatula to poke at the victim's thighs and lips. Munirah was given a total of 12 months' jail while Sirat got six months. They could have been jailed for up to 18 months and/or fined up to $1,500 per charge.

Munirah slapped and punched her maid, and hit her with a metal spatula until it broke.

<!-- story content : start --> FOR three consecutive days in early 2007, an Indonesian maid working in Sengkang was physically abused, including being hit with a metal spatula until it broke. On Feb 17 and 18, Ms Luluk Wiji Utami, 30, was slapped, punched and had her hair pulled by Munirah Abdullah, 47; the spatula incident took place on Feb 19. The maid's error: failing to clean one of the fans in the flat, although some accusations about missing money were also made.

Munirah's son Mohamed Sirat Abu, 27, then an auxiliary police officer, also did his bit on Feb 17. He kicked the maid, grabbed her by her hair and swung her head around until she lost her balance, fell and hit her head. Mother and son, found guilty earlier by District Judge Roy Neighbour, were yesterday sentenced to 12 months and six months in jail respectively. The maid, employed by the household since August 2006, told the court earlier that she did not shout for help out of fear of Munirah.
