A MAN'S sudden death has left his family baffled.

What was he doing at the Singapore Turf Club where he was found slumped in a seat on Friday night?

As far as Mr Abdul Rahman Sumadi's family knew, he doesn't gamble.

When reporters visited Mr Abdul's Woodlands flat yesterday, his widow, who declined to be named, said: 'He didn't tell me he was going to the Turf Club.

'He said he was going to see some friends to seek job opportunities.'

Not worried at first

'When he didn't return after midnight, I wasn't worried as he had the habit of coming home at 2am after meeting his friends.'

But Mrs Abdul later received a call from her sister-in-law, who is married to Mr Abdul's younger brother, saying he had collapsed in the Turf Club.

The police managed to only contact the sister-in-law as his wife does not have a handphone, Shin Min Daily News reported.

Mrs Abdul said that before leaving home on Friday evening, he told her that he was meeting some friends near Admiralty MRT station.

He used to be a warehouse supervisor but had been unemployed since April.

A Turf Club spokesman said Mr Abdul, 54, was alone when club staff noticed he was slumped in his seat around 9.05pm.

Mr Kua Chee Siong, 35, a photojournalist with The New Paper, saw the drama unfold before him as Mr Abdul was seated in front of the media box.

'The other punters were evacuated so the club's medic could perform CPR (cardio-pulmonary resuscitation),' he said.

Mr Kua said Mr Abdul was pale, but after CPR, some colour returned to his face.

The New Paper understands that Mr Abdul became unconscious before 9pm but punters sitting near him did not act as they thought he had dozed off.

The Turf Club staff realised something was wrong with Mr Abdul around the time Race 6 ended, Mr Kua said.

The Turf Club spokesman said: 'Our in-house medic and staff lay him on the floor for the CPR. Because of this, the other punters were asked to move to other areas.'

An ambulance was called and paramedics pronounced Mr Abdul dead at 9.45pm.

Mrs Abdul said her husband did not gamble and did not have any health problems.

A family friend who declined to be named told The New Paper On Sunday that Mr Abdul could have gone to the Turf Club at his friends' request.

The autopsy showed that the father of two boys and a girl had died from heart failure.

Mr Abdul's relatives interrupted the interview with his wife, and his sister told reporters: 'This isn't the right time for you to be here. Please leave.'

Mr Abdul's eldest brother earlier told Lianhe Wanbao at the mortuary that he had reminded him to go for regular health checks.

This was because the family had a medical history of high blood cholesterol levels.

The brother told Lianhe Wanbao: 'If he had listened to me, this might not have happened.'

Mr Abdul was the third of seven children and their father also died from heart disease, according to Lianhe Wanbao.

About 20 friends and relatives paid their respects after Mr Abdul's body arrived at his flat in Block 627 in Woodlands Avenue 6 at 12.15pm.

The police are investigating Mr Abdul's death as an unnatural one.

Nobody noticed him

Family covering his tracks. Obviously he is there either to gamble, meet mistress, or find work in illicit industries.

CCTV cameras can help prove it all. Wait for the followup story in TNP.

Many of them can be seen betting in Turf Club, buying 4D and Toto.
