World Cup rights: Problem lies with MDA, not the telcos

MR JEREMY Au Yong was barking up the wrong tree on Monday ('Time for telcos to stop scoring own goals').
He said SingTel and StarHub owe customers an explanation about what happened with the World Cup rights.
The two telcos merely played by the rules laid down by the Media Development Authority (MDA). The MDA erred in not foreseeing the problem that would arise from the two telcos using pay-TV systems that are not compatible with each other.
Hence, when SingTel secured the right to broadcast the English Premier League (EPL), there was an uproar as consumers would have to have two pay-TV platforms at home.
Then, the World Cup fiasco followed.
It is not up to the telcos to change the rules so that there is a common pay-TV platform. The authorities have had enough time to set matters right - StarHub last secured the EPL rights three years ago.
