Losses drove cop to graft
<!-- by line --> By Khushwant Singh
<!-- end by line -->
DESPERATE to cover his horse racing losses, a police staff sergeant asked an illegal gambling operator for $2,000 in December 2006. Realising that Lim Kay Heng, then attached to the Criminal Investigation Department, was in a position to disrupt his 'business', the operator readily agreed. Identified as Mr Chua Chin Hoe in court documents, the operator also figured that Lim could prove useful in any future police-related matter. However, the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) got wind of the bribery and Lim resigned two months later. He pleaded guilty on Monday. A charge of accepting entertainment amounting to $1,000 from the gambling operator at a karaoke lounge in Havelock Road in April 2006 will be taken into consideration by the judge during sentencing on Monday.
