Lorry driver pleads guilty to abusing CISCO police officer

By Leong Wai Kit | Posted: 31 October 2012 1445 hrs

SINGAPORE: A lorry driver threw sand at a CISCO police officer and used vulgarities on him, after he was issued a summons for illegal parking.

R. Nagulan, 47, pleaded guilty on Wednesday to abusing a CISCO officer.

The court heard the officer, Nedun Seziyan Thangavalu, found a lorry parked illegally on Hampshire Road at about 5.30pm on June 17.

There was no one in the lorry, but the hazard lights were turned on and the engine was running.

Mr Nedun then issued a parking summons.

When Nagulan returned to the lorry, he angrily crushed the summons slip and threw it to the ground.

He also cursed Mr Nedun while throwing sand at him, saying bad luck would befall him.

The court heard Nagulan has previous convictions, between 1982 and 2007.

These included offences like theft, forgery, disorderly behaviour and misuse of drugs.

Nagulan, who was not represented, asked the court for a later sentence.

This was so he could celebrate Deepavali -- which falls on November 13 -- and prepare a written mitigation.

His bail has been extended, and his case will be heard on November 19.

He faces up to one year's jail and a S$5,000 fine if convicted.
