KUCHING, Malaysia- A lorry driver, who rang up his mother in Sibu asking for ransom money to secure his freedom, has been arrested here.
His flimsy version of being kidnapped apparently did not fool the mother who promptly lodged a police report on Thursday.
Earlier, she received a call from her 33-year-old son who told her that she was to send over RM26,000 (S$10,400) or he would have his fingers chopped off one by one.
He told her that she owed some money to three men who were holding him captive.
The son is renting a house in Jalan Arang here and in the 3pm call, he also told her that he had been beaten up.
However, the mother could sense something was not right as prior to this, the son had frequently asked her for money.
Following the report, police swung into action, locating the house and raiding it at around 4.30pm.
To their surprise, the "kidnap victim" was in the living room watching television with three men, believed to be his friends aged 29, 33 and 39. There were no signs of injury on his body, contrary to what he told his mother earlier.
The men were brought to the police station for questioning before being remanded.
State deputy police commissioner SAC Datuk Law Hong Soon said the case would be referred to Sibu police as it was reported there. They will be remanded until Sept 3.
