SINGAPORE: A loanshark runner has been sentenced to 27 months' jail and nine strokes of the cane, as well as a fine of S$30,000, for harassing residents.
23-year-old Soh Yong Hwee faced nine charges of harassment.
He acted under the instructions of a loanshark named 'Horlick', and checked houses for signs of harassment carried out by other loansharks for another unlicensed moneylender 'Ah John'.
The court heard that Soh committed the offences between August and December 2011.
He had borrowed S$500 from each of the loansharks repay his gambling debt. He was later recruited as a runner in July 2011 by the two loansharks.
The prosecution proceeded on four of the charges.
The judge noted that Soh had been sent to reformative training centre for drug trafficking in 2002.
He told the accused that at the rate he is going, he will one day be sent for corrective training or preventive detention.
The judge urged him to "take this chance to turn over a new leaf", and reflect while in jail.
Police have yet to establish the identities of the two loansharks.
