Loanshark runner arrested
POLICE arrested a man on Wednesday afternoon for loanshark harrassment.
The 27-year-old was nabbed following a tip-off from a public-spirited member of public.
Police received a call on Monday evening, from a member of public who had witnessed the suspect splashing paint at a unit in Serangoon, and leaving in a car thereafter. The caller managed to note down the car's license plate number and informed the police accordingly.
Based on the description of the subject and information provided, officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division managed to trace the vehicle and mounted an operation to apprehend the suspect.
At about 12pm on Wednesday, police arrested the suspect at Sin Min Drive. Upon conducting a check on the suspect, pieces of papers with entries relating to loansharking activities were found and seized.
A mobile phone belonging to the suspect was also taken for investigations.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect is believed to be a debtor himself and was working for the loanshark syndicate in order to pay off his outstanding loan.
The suspect will be charged in Court on on Thursday.
First-time offenders found guilty of assisting an unlicensed moneylender by harassing the borrower and besetting the residence shall be liable on conviction to a fine of not less than $4,000, and not more than $40,000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 3 years or both.
He may also be subjected to caning if it is proved to the satisfaction of the court that, in the course of committing the offence, damage was caused to any property or hurt caused to any person.
