Loanshark runner arrested
A 26-YEAR-OLD man was arrested on Monday for suspected involvement in loansharking activities.
Police officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division spotted him behaving suspiciously at a block in Hougang Avenue 1 at about 2.40pm on Monday while they were conducting anti-loansharking operations in the vicinity.
The exercise was in response to several loanshark harassment cases in the area, where walls are often scrawled with paint and loanshark graffiti.
Officers caught the suspect writing something on the wall. The man fled when the officers approached him but he was arrested after a short chase.
He was found to be in possession of a sling bag which contained handphones, cans of paint, paint remover and a marker pen.
The suspect will be charged in Court on Wednesday for loanshark harassment under the Moneylenders Act 2008.
First-time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment may be fined betwen $4,000 and $40,000 or jailed for up to three years or both. They may also be caned if they have caused damage to property or harm to others while committing acts of loanshark harassment.
