Live: Major IT outage hits airlines, businesses worldwide including Singapore, US and Australia

IT outages have been reported across the world, affecting flights, banking and company operations in countries such as Singapore, the United States, the United Kingdom, India and Australia.

The disruptions are due to an issue at cybersecurity software firm CrowdStrike, which is affecting Microsoft's Windows operating system. It is not a cyberattack, CrowdStrike said on Friday (Jul 19).

- Here in Asia, airports in Singapore, Bangkok, Hong Kong and India are among those affected, with long lines seen at check-in counters. Jetstar Japan has cancelled or delayed some of its domestic flights.

- Malaysia's airport operator said some airlines have been affected. They include low-cost carrier AirAsia. Railway operator KTMB’s ticketing system was also hit.

- The problems are due to an issue at cybersecurity company CrowdStrike, which said a defect was found in a "single content update for Windows hosts". Microsoft said it was taking "mitigation actions" in response to service issues.

- Major US air carriers including Delta, United and American Airlines have grounded all flights. Elsewhere, flights in Sydney, Spain and Germany have also been affected.
- The London Stock Exchange delayed the start of trade. Sky News in the UK and Australia’s ABC were not able to broadcast live.

'It's been a nightmare': Tempers flare as some passengers at Changi Airport miss their flight

Self-check-in machines were down when CNA's Vanessa Lim arrived at Changi Airport Terminal 1, leading to long queues as check-ins had to be done at the counters. Some passengers CNA spoke to said they were anxious and frustrated as they were unsure they could make it for their flights on time. Others missed their flights due to the global IT outage and a heated exchange ensued at Scoot’s flight management counter.

Crowdstrike was partly involved in stealing the 2020 US presidential election.

We are certainly reaching the endgame of a chess game.

This song was played at the end of the RNC. If you know, you know.

What happened to BACK UP systems - unconnected servers with proven working software that are on STANDBY to replace upgraded servers but turned out faulty with system upgrades or any vulnerability tests conducted?

Do such measures not exists within critical govt & corporate systems?

Nobody expected the system to fail. It's not suppose to happen

CrowdStrike CEO apologises for tech outage, says IT systems should be recovering

CrowdStrike CEO George Kurtz has apologised for a global tech failure that disrupted multiple industries, vowing to work with all of its customers as they work to get their operations back online.

"We're deeply sorry for the impact that we've caused to customers, to travelers, to anyone affected by this, including our company," he told NBC News' Today programme. "Many of the customers are rebooting the system and it's coming up, and it'll be operational.

Kurtz added that the update to its widely used "Falcon Sensor" software had "a software bug in it" that caused an issue with the Microsoft operating system.

When asked how did a single update bring down so many IT systems worldwide. Kurtz said that "when you look at the complexity of cybersecurity, you're trying to stay one step ahead of the adversaries".

"This content update went out ... we've got a robust team looking at the safety and quality of these updates and we've got to go back and see what happened here, but if there is a negative interaction with the way some of these operating systems work, you'll see a reaction like this and this is what we've seen here."

Kurtz said some systems will not automatically recover despite deploying the fix and it could take some time before that happens.

However, he stressed the cybersecurity firm "would make sure every customer is fully recovered".

CrowdStrike's fix for users experiencing IT issues

IT security firm CrowdStrike earlier released a fix for systems affected by the update to its widely used "Falcon Sensor" software, causing Microsoft Windows to crash and display the dreaded Blue Screen of Death.

For the details on how to resolve the issue, click here.

ALWAYS expect the UNEXPECTED to happen. It had been a legacy of PRAGMATIC PREPAREDNESS that our Founding & Forefathers left for us, to be ready always for the juggernaut of CHANGE which is only the constant in life & FIND beforehand necessary counter measures to save efficiency & lives .

Thus the need for CAUTION ALWAYS, more so on systems or ideologies from others.

ALL Humans are flawed & none perfect, so too any supposed 'SYSTEMS' they create. Thus the NEED for EFFECTIVE & EFFICIENT BACK UP SYSTEMS, or known as Plan B. Only morons & self centered jaikliaobees would do nothing & expect that they will be able to survive, draw a huge salary despite their incompetence as supposed foreign talents, or relied upon by similar jaikliaobee locals, in a competitive & changing World...

Rigorous system testing is necessary, thru the way of SCIENTIFIC methodology, which must be applied, without haste or desires for huge profits from the naive & early adopters of such questionable systems, since the courageous age of enlightenment that began in Europe in the 16th century, devoid of any beliefs or dogmas, with no fear to any prince or principalities, that saw Humanity's advancement & progress.
