Litterbugs will be slapped with a RM250 fine from Feb 1

GEORGE TOWN: Litterbugs beware! The Penang Municipal Council (MPPP) will be increasing the current fine of RM50 to RM250 beginning Feb 1.

MPPP financial management sub-committee alternate chairman Tan Hun Wooi said this was to curb the menace of people still throwing rubbish everywhere and anywhere despite rubbish bins provided at all areas.

He said even those who throw a cigarette butt or a tissue paper would be slapped with a RM250 fine.

“And bear in mind there will be no discount offered.

“There are a few department’s within the MPPP that can issue these compounds including the enforcement, licensing and municipality services section,” he said during a full council meeting here Monday.

Besides that those who don’t not dispose off rubbish after renovation works, rubbish from their kitchen or any form of rubbish properly, the fine would increase to RM250 from the current RM50.

Tan said those who placed unwanted stuff by the roadside would also face a fine of RM250, as well as the RM500 fine of dropping of cement from lorries transporting the material.

He said all these were in accordance under the council’s Building, Drainage and Road Act 1974.

“We are allowing the public to know that we are serious about this matter, and therefore we are giving them ample time to be on the alert before the new rates apply.

“This is also in line with the Cleaner, Greener Penang’ initiative, to create awareness on the importance to protect the environment and mother nature,” he added.
