SINGAPORE: NTUC Secretary-General Lim Swee Say has responded to reports where presidential hopeful Tan Kin Lian explained why he was asked to leave NTUC Income, which he had helmed for nearly 30 years.

Mr Tan had said the board wanted NTUC to be more commercial, whereas he wanted NTUC to be more cooperative.

Mr Lim said he has no doubts NTUC has never lost focus of its social mission of doing good and in supporting workers. He said the NTUC cooperatives' aim is to be competitive so that they can continue to serve the people.

He said: "I was actually quite puzzled by what Mr Tan Kin Lian said about that the board wanting the cooperatives to be more commercial because to the best of my knowledge, I think to become more commercial, to become more professional are two different things.

"My understanding is that the board has always wanted NTUC Income to become more professional in a sustainable manner. So what it means is that in terms of development of the leadership at all levels is something that the board attaches a lot of importance."

Mr Tan had spoke about his time at NTUC earlier.

Mr Tan said: "Over the second half of my career, I had to struggle with a few key members of the board and some union leaders on the question of privatising NTUC Income. These followed the privatisation of the cooperative running the taxi service.

"I felt strongly that NTUC Income should not follow this route and the privatisation would be detrimental to its one million policyholders. Singaporeans need only to see the operations of the privatised bus and train services to understand why I had fought so hard for NTUC to remain a cooperative."

Mr Tan also said he was being unfairly criticised for a few bad investments - in particular Ciputra Mall and Club Nuansa, which caused losses of about S$30 million.

But it was more than offset by over S$1 billion of investment gains from other property and equity investments.

Mr Tan said the influence of the trade union directors diminished over the years as more directors were taken from the private sector and as such, did not understand the principles of a cooperative "so passionately".

And the PAP machinery is beginning to lumber into place. The cog wheels of propoganda, distortion and one sidedness is starting. Remember how the juggernaut pulled out all stops to discredit JB, Francis Seow etc.? Well the time has come as the Presidential Elections kick in.

The fun has just started and perish all ye who enter here. May you live in interesting times.

Why the MIW are discreditng all the PE candiidates except Tony Tan? I hope sinkies will give them the 'George Yeo' treatment and vote against Tony Tan.

Lim Swee Say is a clown - being commercially viable and professional are NOT mutually exclusive. No organisation can become great without being professional first.
This bugger is getting $2m+ a year to talk nonsense like this? He is a minister?
