Life for raping students
<!-- by line --> <!-- end by line --> HANOI (Vietnam) - AN ELEMENTARY school teacher in central Vietnam has been sentenced to life in prison after being convicted of raping five of his students, a court official said on Wednesday. Physical education teacher Ngo Ton Huyen, 49, was convicted of child rape on Tuesday in a half-day trial in the People's Court of central Phu Yen province, said court officer Nguyen Minh Thanh. The teacher was arrested in May after a student witnessed Huyen - who taught in the 4th and 5th grade - raping a classmate in a classroom during recess and reported it to school officials, Mr Thanh said. After an investigation was announced, more of Huyen's students, ages 10 and 11, came forward to say he had raped them, Mr Thanh said. Some said they'd been attacked several times. Huyen could have faced the death penalty under Vietnam's tough child rape laws but was instead sentenced to life in prison, Mr Thanh said. The court also ordered Huyen to pay 39 million dong (S$2,800) fine to be divided among the victims. Vietnam has given lengthy prison sentences to at least three other teachers in the past year after they were convicted of raping students. -- AP
