Gao Jun the surprise winner over Li Jia Wei

Thirty-nine years old, the most senior player on duty at the Volkswagen Women’s World Cup in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Gao Jun of the United States was the lady to cause the biggest upset in the first series of matches played in the group stage on the morning of Saturday 6th September 2008.
In four straight games, she beat the number three seed, Singapore’s Li Jia Wei, using her vast experience to the full.
A renowned doubles expert, she used skills in singles play to great effect, to outwit her younger opponent.
Hebei Training Centre
Penhold grip, right handed, short pimples, staying close the table at all times; the style of Gao Jun is from a bygone era but as she proved in Kuala Lumpur, very effective.
Gao Jun originates from Baoding in Hebei Province, where she graduated to the Provincial Table Tennis Centre in Shijiazhuang before joining the Chinese National Team and then emigrating to the United States.
Liu Lili
Coach at the centre is Liu Lili, a lady who has produced a host of fine female players.
Lui Lili is from the same era as Gao Jun, later she became the Women’s Head Coach in Hebei Province and in addition to Gao Jun has guided the fortunes of Li Qian, now in Poland, Xian Yi Fang, now in France plus current Chinese stars Niu Jianfeng, Bai Yang and Jia Jun.
Twenty years of experience and a first class coach in her younger days were elements that combined to bring Gao Jun success against Li Jia Wei.
Top Seeds Progress
However, the win recorded by Gao Jun was the only surprise in the opening encounters; the others went as per programme.
In Group A top seed China’s Guo Yue beat the Dominican Republic’s Wu Xue, whilst Hong Kong’s Jiang Huajun overcame Congo Brazaville’s Yan Feng.

Similarly, in Group B matters went according to plan.
China’s, second seeded Li Xiaoxia, defeated Li Jiao of the Netherlands whilst Singapore’s Feng Tianwei overpowered Australia’s Maiao Miao.
Asians Supreme
The win of Gao Jun was the notable contest in Group C with Hong Kong’s Tie Yana defeating Hungary’s Georgina Pota in the corresponding match, whilst in Group D Singapore’s Wang Yue Gu overcame Romania’s Daniela Dodean and Korea’s Kim Kyung Ah used her defensive skills to maximum effect to overcome Malaysia’s Beh Lee Wei.
