Changes to electoral system to encourage wider range of views in Parliament

SINGAPORE: The Singapore government has announced proposed changes to the country's electoral system to encourage a wider range of views in Parliament, including opposition and non-government views.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced these proposed changes in Parliament on Wednesday.

He said each Parliament will have at least nine opposition members and nine Nominated Members of Parliament (NMPs), so that there will be at least 18 Members of Parliament (MPs) who are not from the ruling party.

The number of Non-Constituency MPs (NCMPs), who did not win a seat during an election but have the next highest percentage of votes, will increase from six to nine.

A proposal will be made to the Parliamentary Elections Act to set a cap of two NCMPs to come from any Group Representation Constituency (GRC). Parliament will also automatically have Nominated MPs.

Mr Lee added that the Nominated MP scheme will be expanded to include Singaporeans from civil society like young activists or those in the environmental movement.

He also said that there will be fewer six-member GRCs and a range of smaller GRCs in the next election, while the number of Single Member Constituencies will be increased to 12 from the current nine.

Prime Minister Lee explained that he is making the changes now, not because he is about to call elections, but so that the matter can be discussed and changes made in ample time before the next election.

They will still use all kinds of tricks to win. At most, cannot win, all NMPs kenna defamation lawsuit, EVMs are used, SAF is called in, another repeat of the mysterious new ballots in Cheng San election, you know their usual stunts confirm will repeat.

Besides, the 9-opposition thing may be a result of PAP's grassshits RC running dogs' reports. Since PAP figures that in an honest election opposition may win 40-50 seats but with maybe tiny majority for most seats and 70% majority in 9 seats, they concede 9 seats up front and use tricks to retain the remaining seats.

PAPpies are experts at lying and creating sham democracies. If LHL concedes 9 seats, probably he is expecting to lose 45 in an honest election.:oIo::oIo::oIo:

Ass Loong want to give an impression to increase the number of NCMPs and NMPs so that there are alternative voices, more feedback and debates in the parliament. But NCMPs and NMPs have no voting rights and only real elected Opposition Mps have voting rights and they canprovide alternative solutions. Constitution will still be pass as easily through the Parliament like laosai since PAP MPs still form more than 2/3 of the parliament.

Opposition should be given 27 seats because they won 33% of the population votes. We want oppositions in parliament with voting rights and not just somebodies who are there to entertain pap who will be the ultimate decision maker. We want the current parliament overhaul with good numbers of oppositions representing the people. PAP should not longer be the only party that rule this country. I vote LHL of no confident.

9 from opps camps? That's interesting! All the opps parties, especially WP's candidates will now fight internally to go to A and B Team, even it's to stab each others - in order to go to the parliament, even only as NCMP which they opposed NCMP scheme initially.

Brilliant move! That's the way to fix the opps!

1) Let the opps members stab each others
2) Vote for MIWs - since there will be 9 best losers in the parliament
3) The 9 biggest losers will speak on your behalf - but they can't vote on your behalf
