PM unveils team contesting Ang Mo Kio
by Dylan Loh 04:47 AM Apr 11, 2011SINGAPORE - Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong yesterday announced the line-up for his team contesting Ang Mo Kio Group Representation Constituency in the coming General Election. The team includes Aljunied GRC Member of Parliament Yeo Guat Kwang, Ang Mo Kio GRC MP Inderjit Singh, Yio Chu Kang SMC MP Seng Han Thong and new PAP candidates Ang Hin Kee and Dr Intan Azura Mokhtar.
Mr Ang is the chief executive office of the National Trades Union Congress Employment and Employability Institute (e2i), which helped 40,000 workers last year by providing better jobs, developing better skills through professional development, and improving productivity for companies.
Incumbent MP for the constituency, Mr Wee Siew Kim, said he will not contest in the next election.
Taking over from Mr Wee will be Dr Intan, 35, who is an Assistant Professor in Policy and Leadership Studies at the National Institute of Education.
Dr Intan started doing volunteer work in 2006, first with Mendaki, then the Singapore Muslim Women's Association, and the Singapore Children's Society.
Mr Wee had high praise for Dr Intan. He said: "She will be a breath of fresh air, bringing with her different and innovative ideas. She will provide the leadership to make further progress and changes. She has already been serving Jalan Kayu for the past three months. Many of the residents and grassroots leaders have interacted with her. I am sure she has touched many with her sincere and humble personality."
Yesterday's community event in Jalan Kayu, where Mr Lee was the guest-of-honour, saw 130 needy families receive hong bao and goodie bags, sponsored by the Management Development Institute of Singapore.
This help is part of the Jalan Kayu Heart Strings programme, which was launched by Mr Lee in June 2009. It seeks to improve the quality of life of senior citizens and needy families with per capita income of less than $450 per month. They receive a monthly package of necessities from their respective residents' committees.
Yesterday's event also saw the launch of the Jalan Kayu residents committee youth chapters.
The programme will create and provide platforms for youths to contribute meaningfully to the community and identify potential youths for the renewal of grassroots leaders.
Also on the cards is a sports hub which is being proposed to be built at Buangkok Crescent. It will provide facilities for tennis, beach volleyball, petanque, multi-purpose courts and a sheltered pavilion.

I second Mad Ting Tong..a clean-sweep by our beloved PM LHL and a BIG MANDATE for our PAP. And yes election should be held minimun at 10 years interval is more productive especially since no worthy contenders in sight over the next 100 years.Report AbuseMad Ting Tong

Its humbling to see our PM himself in the husting. To serve the records and honour PAP's unreserved service to Singapore for over 50 years, it would be order to extend tenure for election to 10 or 15 years. This would allow the incumbent more time to galvanise policies especially in this rapid changing times and the fact that a multi-party political system will never be possible in Singapore and which is also unnecssary.
