NS and benefits enjoyed by PRs top dialogue with PM Lee

SINGAPORE : National service for new arrivals and ideas to help integrate permanent residents and new citizens with Singaporeans were some of the issues discussed with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong during his hour-long dialogue with women professionals on Thursday.

The dialogue was attended by representatives from 25 women's organisations.

Besides raising several issues, they also spoke of their experiences. These concerned Singapore's education system, national service for new citizens, and benefits enjoyed by citizens and permanent residents.

Mr Lee said: "I have to have a clear distinction between citizens, and non-citizens and between citizens who do NS and citizens who have not done NS. And that is what we have tried to do. That is why every few years we have a RECORD Committee, and we have to make a clearer distinction between the citizens and the PRs.

"When it comes to education fees, we have widened the difference between citizens and PRs and we will continue to widen (it). Similarly healthcare, in our hospitals, PRs pay significantly more than citizens in all classes of wards, and that also gradually we will widen.

"And then between the PRs and the foreigners, we have another clear differentiation in treatment. So I cannot make it completely flat because intrinsically it is not comparable.

"But I can redress some of this sense of 'not quite fair', and we can do more of these measures. But I cannot stop people bringing the people in, and unfortunately I cannot do away with NS."

Some mothers suggested that national service be broken up, instead of two years at a go.

Mr Lee responded: "It is better to have the two years as one block and compact it. From the SAF point of view, it is better because two years as one block, I am genuinely making full use of the soldier... train, go on course, become a specialist or officer, posted to a unit, train to operate a unit and become a proper operational which can actually deploy and fight and then ORD. If I do it three months here, six months there, I am just pretending to have a battalion."

Mr Lee stressed that the challenges faced by Singapore - be it the economic crisis or population shortfall - cannot be solved by the government alone. All Singaporeans must unite to tackle them together. - CNA/ms

As long as you both have an income, you just can not stop that; but with no income, it will stop.

But you can stop LHL from bringing people in, by voting on not to pay him the salary he is getting....

So what about stop at two policy? Wasn't that govt intervention? CPF cuts during recession wasn't that policy set by govt?

Tax increases (GST) that caused spiralling costs, wasn't that your idea Mr. Lee?

Now you want Sinkees to help you after you heaped shit into their rice bowl?

You got to be joking, you pay yourself millions and are supposed to be the best in the world and you don't know what to do about crises and low birthrates? Let me make you look like you are working and had come up with this idea by yourself, don't worry I won't say you plagiarised or "stole" them from me.

Low Birth rates:

Let me give you some suggestions, free maternity care, delivery costs and hospitalisation including pre and post natal care up to age 3 or 3 years for both child and mother for Singaporean mothers with Singaporean husbands.

Moral of the policy, it pays to be Singaporean, really!

These mothers get a fixed allowance of $400 for (subject to upward change to due to inflation) each month they stay home and take care of the baby until they get back to work or to a maximum of 3 years. This allowance is tranferable if a grandparent takes care of the baby while the mother chooses to return to work after maternity leave expires. Baby bonus scheme and all other current schemes are to run concurrent with the above.

Put $10B in a steady earning financial instrument that is principal guaranteed, a return of 2% per annum would be sufficient to finance the above scheme, if insufficient increase the principal amount, rather than losing $200B of taxpayers money on crap investments.

Unemployment:

Reduce defence budget, is Singapore really going to war?

Legislation against employers not wanting to employ married/pregnant or planning to get pregnant women or women with young children. Stiff penalties and swift investigations if such matters come up.

This will increase the workforce immediately thus generating tax revenue and consumption.

Economic crises suggestions:

Get rid of your wife in Temasick and teach her how to buy low sell high and not buy high sell low.

Transparency now!

Discrimination laws to be legislated. Legislate employment ratios of 70% Sgean and the rest can come from any 3rd world hellhole at the employer's risk.

Productivity is decreasing simply because many foreign talents do not work as hard as Singaporeans do, and then Sgeans get fed up and adopt the same attitude as these so called talents.

The once proud work ethic of Singaporeans has been eroded because of this.

It's your fault for allowing such morons into the country Mr. Lee.

Strict vetting of immigrants, we don't need anymore PRC karang guni and hawkers and the like. These people do not add value to the economy simply because they will be repatriating money earned and not contributing to domestic consumption.

Stop cheapeaning the pink IC if not more Sgeans will leave and you are in the end stuck with those who can't leave and the rest would be a whole lot of crap that no other country wants, making Sg the only developed nation with 3rd world citizens.

Stop using taxpayers money to pay for foreign students education. 6 in 10 will stay the rest will jump ship, open your eyes you fool! That's a 100% loss out of 40% of each cohort.

Remove posts such as MM, SM and all other useless funtions and appointments and reduce govt size. No more pensions while still in office. No more free medical for all civil servants and politicians buy your own damned insurance like true CEOs do. Trim the fat!

We do not need an obese bureaucracy that is lethargic at best which sucks in it's oversized bellies only to fawn and serve politicians and not the public. If these people are as good as you say they are then they shouldn't have problems woking in the private sector when their jobs are lost.

Why did the HDB retrench staff only to rehire them? Costing public coffers several tens of millions.

Savings from the cut Defence Budget is to be used to develop out lying islands into full facility mini towns that has a thriving local economy. Perhaps the faculty of marine biology or marine related fields of study and research should be set up and the island would be like a campus town with regular ferry services to and from the mainland.

Forget about grandiose homes for the super wealthy on such islands, the benefit the nation is minimal but the social cost is high.

Grants for NSmen to set up their own viable businesses that is vetted by succesful businessmen not some fat cat bureaucrat who is very happy when he sees his monthly CPF statement and cries at badminton games.

Stop the obsession with this hub this and hub that! Use the saved funds to for social services and for welfare. Welfare is not a dirty word it's the responsible thing to do.

See I do not have to be a million dollar useless minister to come up with concrete ideas that will benefit the nation.

One more to add :

Pay NSmen equivalent of market rate. We can base this rate on what it would take to hire 18 year old after factoring in risk to life and limb (operating heavy equipment etc), long hours, extra ordinary physical activity, loss of freedom. I think this is easily $2K to $3K a month. Adjustments can be made for edu level meaning those with A level can get above the $2K to $3K base.

Pay NSmen this equivalent pay or if you want use $$ to top up annuity scheme which would probably allow a $300 monthly payment (adjusted for cost of living increases) for 20 years starting at 65 years of age.

This is how we pay ministers so why shouldn't NS men be paid market wages.

Wasn't he the Finance Ministar, when SINgapore wnet into recession in 198x?, due to high Central Provident Rates...

Yes! we can't stop bringing people in, but we can stop all these, by making our votes count!

Many of our neighbours at the 'village', had migrated years ago, people whom I grew up with have gone for good.

I could have gone WEST, if not stopped by ASIA VALUES of filial piety...the ones now they are exploring in passing a legislation in compelling us to look after our aging parents..

What to do, it already happened..let us move on...

All the best to you...and stop to smell the roses!...even if the grass is not greener over there...at least the air is less stiffling!

Hopefully, his children will have lots of opportunities to deal with "FTs", especially China nationals. The only china national he knows is probably Wen Jiabao.

Hi Hal,

I can only very soon look from afar and empathise with what Sgeans will have to go through in the coming decades.

Those who cannot leave will have an uphill task of keeping their homes and keeping their sanity. The push factors for Sgeans is getting greater and the pull factor is getting greater for foreigners.

The PAP doesn't mind the braindrain because there will be people with sufficient education to fill in those places. It may be 2 or 3 of these lower grade probably fake cert people filling the shoes of one but they would still cost a heck of a lot less than the one Sgean that has left.

They would actually prefer a bunch of non thinkers and morons that replace Sgeans in the end simply keep them employed and ensure employers do not mess with their salaries and there will be no protests and such.

Keep them happy and the PAP will rule till kingdom come. Already the Sgean votes are diluted it's too late, soon Sgeans will be a dying breed.

I have always stopped to smell the roses or rather pick a prickly pear from a cactus, an apple or orange from my backyard and ate it.

The Granite Dells in Prescott Arizona, my new hometown, is a gorgeous place to just relax and enjoy the sun and cool weather. Nicely lawned courtyards in public parks with people who clean up after themselves and share common space responsibly is the norm.

No uncouth PRCs and smelly Ah Nehs or Pinoys. Everyone greets each other or tips their hat to say hi, the perfect town and the perfect life, I can't be happier.

The pine tree trails, mountain treks and even morell mushroom hunting season is so fun. A great quality of life. The desert areas in the lower lying areas is just beautiful. Great sunsets and sunrises, sunsets never seen before, clear night skies with air so fresh and clean you want to give up smoking and just want to get into shape again just to enjoy all these things even more.

This is my new "village", I am glad I decided to go. I understand your filial piety and your need to be responsible, it's the same for me but in 2 years my folks will come along too. Perhaps it's never too late or you too.

Cheers,

MM
