Clinic rejects Brunei currency

<!-- by line --><!-- end by line -->

ON MONDAY evening, I sought treatment at Lee Family Clinic in Gek Poh Shopping Centre. After the consultation, I paid with two Brunei $10 notes. However, the clinic assistant refused to accept that as payment, saying the clinic did not accept Brunei currency.
Isn't the Currency Interchangeability Agreement between Singapore and Brunei still in place? How can retailers refuse to accept Brunei notes for payment? Can the Monetary Authority of Singapore please comment?

Brunei bank notes and currency are not legal tender in Singapore, which means shops, retailers and merchants are not legally bound to accept them.

The usual case of hitting the keyboard without first engaging brain!

Tuesday, June 12, 2007 That Singapore and Brunei are today marking 40 years of currency interchangeability with a special banknote might come as a shock to some.

And it's not the part about the special banknote, it's that the two small southeast Asian countries have had interchangeable currencies for 40 years.

Singaporean Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong admits that not a lot of Singaporeans know about it, and that currency from Brunei is routinely refused by Singaporean retailers.

Coins circulating in Brunei as of 2006. The currency is interchangeable with Singapore's.

Location of Brunei.

"They are not used to seeing Bruneian currency," Goh said at a press conference yesterday in Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital of Brunei. He added that he sees the need to educate Singaporean retailers "again and again" on the matter.

Maybe, said Goh, if more money from the tiny, oil-rich sultanate on Borneo was spent in the island republic of Singapore, there would be change.
"If Bruneians spend a lot of money in Singapore, and you have millions of Brunei dollars floating around, there'll be no problem. So the retailers see the currency, they are not familiar with it," Goh said.

"So from time to time, we have to tell the retailers that there is an interchangeable agreement with Brunei and the currency must be accepted," Goh continued.

The 40th anniversary banknote will be an important tool in educating Singaporeans about current interchangeability, Goh said.

The problem is if someone starts faking Brunei notes, it is not easy for the average person to detect it, as they seldom see those notes. At least, the average person will find it easier to recognise poor fakes of the SG currency.

I myself tend to reject Brunei currency in SG to save myself the hassle of having to remember what another currency set looks like.

We seldom see Brunei currency notes, even though they are legal tender, don't blame the LEE family clinic for not accepting them. For the only currency notes that they trust is the one with the 1st president of SINgapore, Yusoff Ishak, who incidentally drawn to look like a MEXICAN.

The Lee Family clinic knows only currency notes that, when placed underblue UV light says.. "IN LEE WE TRUST"! ha ha ha ha:D

IN thailand, there is no such problem.

CB kia tonychat,

thinking with your asshole again huh:oIo:

Maybe he accept Brunei $ as payment for his ladyboy wife's services to clients.
Didn't know nowadays Pimps so accommodating!

Actually he wasn't wrong, Brunei Currency is not legal tender, however it is "customary tender"(whatever that means)

Not LEEgal tender..is right..but due to an agreement, it is an accpetable currency that can be used in bith countries..;)
