Lecturer charged with taking bribes
JOHOR BARU: A department head from the Temenggong Ibrahim Teacher's Training Institute was charged yesterday with taking about RM37,000 in bribes in relation to awarding building-related contracts three years ago.
The institute's Science Department head, Azmi Hassan, 49, pleaded not guilty to receiving a Maybank cheque for RM37,069.40 from Sulaiman Adom, 42, on Aug 24, 2009 for awarding Sulaiman a contract worth RM198,927 to upgrade the sewage system and also a RM198,999 contract to upgrade the institute's staff quarters.
Azmi, a lecturer at the institute, was alleged to have committed the offences at No. 02-04, Larkin Indah, Jalan Datin Halimah, here, about 11am on Aug 24, 2009.
Sessions Court judge Mohamad Haidar Abdul Aziz set bail at RM5,000 in one surety pending mention on Oct 24.
