SEOUL ―The lead singer for South Korea’s top boy group Shinee died on Monday (Dec 18) after being taken to hospital unconscious, said local media reports.
Kim Jong-hyun, 27, was rushed to the hospital after he was found unconscious at a home in Cheongdam-dong in southern Seoul.
The Korean National Police Agency said they received a call from his sister at 4.42pm (local time) on Monday, said The Korea Herald. Kim's sister made the call to the police, reporting that she believed that her brother may have attempted suicide.
The singer was found with a burning coal briquette nearby, said The Korea Herald. The police said they will investigate the incident as a suspected suicide.
Shinee is a boy group formed by SM Entertainment in 2008. The group consists of five members - Lee Tae-Min, Choi Min-ho, Lee Jin Ki, Kim Jong-hyun and Kim Ki-bum. Some of their popular songs include "Hello" and "Ring Ding Dong" and "Sherlock".
Earlier this year, Shinee released their fifth Japanese album, "Five" and toured across Japan till April. They performed in Tokyo Dome and Kyocera Dome in September.
In August, Lee Jin Ki, also known as Onew, was accused of touching a woman inappropriately at a club in Gangnam. He was arrested at the club after the woman's friend called the police. Onew denied the charges, citing that he has no memory of the alleged incident as he was too drunk when it happened. AGENCIES
