After reading through the speech entitled "The world order will be rebalanced," given by Singaporean founder and "Minister Mentor" Lee Kuan Yew in the US, I got the impression that the Singapore leader regards himself as the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) leader and is calling on a US wary of a rising China.

Lee Kuan Yew's speech was given at a time when Singapore obviously feels the world order is changing. US power and status are declining while China's rising.

Moreover, Sino-US relations are becoming gradually closer. As a small country in Southeast Asia, an anxious Singapore might not be able to face the new reality. This speech may reflect the current situation there.

The world is dominated by the big powers, but small countries are not without its own positions, and even power. Some small countries in Europe can successfully safeguard their national sovereignty while forming their own economic characteristics within the existing order, such as Austria, Denmark, Switzerland, and so on.

Overall, Singapore is a small country with relatively successful development.

After the founding of Singapore, it played a very positive role in the communication between China and the West by keeping good relations with the big powers such as the US, Britain, China and Japan while being surrounded by powerful neighbors in the Cold War environment. Singapore also benefited by taking advantage of China's reform and opening-up. The majority population in Singapore is Chinese, which means Singapore has more advantages in dealing with China than other ASEAN countries in culture and language.

Since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Singapore in 1990, there has been a substantial increase in trade and investment between the two countries. China had also hired prominent figures in Singapore as Chinese national policy advisors, selected Singapore as the site for the first official cross-Straits talk between Chinese mainland and Taiwan sin 1949, and helped Singapore in the Southeast Asian financial crisis. The above shows that China has always regarded Singapore as a good friend.

His speech is only prominent in his own newspaper.
