Wrong to let young candidate sneak in

WHILE I fully support the self-renewal concept of the People's Action Party (PAP), I was taken aback by some of the candidates it is fielding for the upcoming general election.

Although those like ex-army chief Chan Chun Sing and former Monetary Authority of Singapore managing director Heng Swee Keat have proven themselves in their respective professions and are clearly excellent candidates who can hold their own, the same cannot be said for some of the others.

The PAP leadership may think that the criticism levelled against its youngest new candidate, Ms Tin Pei Ling, 27, is unfair. Indeed, some of the remarks were uncalled for. But we need to dig deeper to understand why many Singaporeans are criticising her candidacy.

Ms Tin could not rebut criticism on her own and had to be defended repeatedly by Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong and several other heavyweight ministers and MPs.

If she is as good as the party leadership says she is, she should perhaps be fielded in a single-member constituency.

If she can hold her own against an unknown opposition candidate in a straight fight, she will gain the respect of all Singaporeans.

If young Singaporeans do indeed desire such a young and inexperienced candidate as Ms Tin to represent them in Parliament, she should be able to defeat an older and equally inexperienced opposition candidate.

For Ms Tin to sneak into Parliament on the shoulders of Mr Goh or any other heavyweight minister would make a mockery of the parliamentary system the PAP has constructed.

Tan Siong Kuan

the above STFORUM letter says it all.

GRC isn't really meant to bring in minority representative into parliament. that was the original purpose of GRC, isn't it?

lau goh has ushered in young things like TIN PENG LING - fresh, clean and totally blurqueen into parliament. tin peng ling is chinese - not malay, indian or eurasian. she is CHINESE. then why the need for GRC??

pap set this GRC system only to abuse and con fellow voters that without this vehicle, minority representatives have very limited chance to get voted.

so now what's with a young chinese inexperience little girl gotta do with the principle of ushering into parliament through GRC??

the likes of the above mentioned should remain in their original respective posts. how does a ex-army chief that's rigid with all the rules, regulation and follow to the hilt be able to run a normal very flexible and versatible real world living of the voters?

as for heng swee kiat, ex- ceo of MAS, he hasn't really fairly and satisfactory compelled banks and financial institutions to compensate unwary investors caught in the minibonds traps. what has he done so far appears to have benefitted the banks/financial institutions but not the investors. if he were to represent the voters, he could be sway to side the stronger and more influential powers that he's beholden to.

Well said. I can only hope she and the GRC team she is in is defeated.

the reason for gct to motherhen freshie newbies who are young is already very obvious abuse of the GRC system. if that's the super kiasu-kiasee case, GRC should be scrapped as it doesn't serve it purpose any more. by the way, the purpose of minority NOT easily voted in is a total lie! why is michael palmer involved himself in a SWC?

sgp has already evolved to the present state where all races are looked upon as equal and as SINGAPOREANS. gct and the rest of the pappies are just playing up again this age old fallacy to validate their kiasuism machinery in GRC.
