KUALA LUMPUR - As Deepavali is just around the corner, more and more Indian families are avidly engrossed in some last-minute shopping. Housewife M. Rajeswary, 33, said she usually shops at the last minute as the prices were cheaper.

"Based on my experience, this is usually the time where the shop owners will bring out all the additional stocks which, sometimes, are really unique," she said when met at Deepavali Carnival 2012 in Bukit Jalil, here, yesterday.

Rajeswary and her husband, K. Murali, 37, said they preferred to shop in Brickfields as the festive spirit was more evident there.

Echoing their sentiments was G. Kavitha, who said that Deepavali was the best time to buy traditional wear for the rest of the year.

"The variety is overwhelming and shopping at the last minute makes the whole experience more exciting," said the 36-year-old from Rawang.

Also indulging in Deepavali shopping was Nurul Maizatul, 26, from Klang.

"The Indian culture fascinates me and the colourful clothes and rich food are some of the best things during Deepavali."

Maizatul said that while accompanying her friends to shop, she would take the opportunity to look for a salwar kameez.

"It is hard to get such selections on regular days and the whole festive atmosphere just makes it more exhilarating," said Maizatul.

Sheela, an accessory and clothes vendor at the Bukit jalil carnival, said sales had boosted tremendously this year.

"The last few days heading up to Deepavali are usually the busiest, as many will be rushing to do their last-minute shopping,

"The most sought after accessory this year is the jhumka (hanging earrings)," said Sheela.

Saree vendor Chandrashekar said the prices of goods this year remained the same as in previous years.

"A favourite this year is the kanjeepuram saree", said Chandrashekar, whose stall displayed a wide array of silk and cotton sarees from Kanjeepuram, India.
