ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - A break in a lateral sewer line was determined to be the cause of a sinkhole that shut down several lanes on Ponce De Leon and Penn Avenues on Tuesday afternoon, the City of Atlanta Department of Watershed Management said.
A Cartersville couple told Atlanta News First that they were driving down the busy Midtown Street around 2 p.m. to pick up a pizza when the ground around them opened up, sending their white SUV into a 6-foot-deep cavity and causing damage.
By 4:30 p.m., emergency responders were able to pull the car out and tow it away. The man managed to climb out of the driver’s side door while his wife escaped through the back.
“Watershed team has found the root cause and is repairing it,” according to the City of Atlanta Department of Watershed Management.
Drivers on the road should plan to use caution and seek alternate routes if possible. The department said they believe it could take hours to complete repairs.
