With the growing popularity of the lab grown diamond, the natural diamond industry sees the need for technology to differentiate between synthetic and natural diamond. De Beers India managing director Amit Pratihari, while talking to TNIE, said that while he does not see competition from the synthetic diamond market, he sees risk of non-disclosure by sellers of synthetic diamonds.

“Not giving the customer the right information is a risk. I think, therefore, the right kind of certification, buying from the right brand is important,” says Pratihari, who talks about having the right institutions which can grade 100% natural diamonds.

De Beers has a lab institute, which used to grade only for the in-house brands, but now they have opened it for other retailers.

Pratihari says that the natural diamond industry is working with the Gems and Jewellery Exports Promotion Council (GJEPC) and giving information to the government on how it should work on developing quality certification. He informed that India follows Federation Trade Commission (FTC) regulations for grading diamonds and the government has now made it mandatory to use the term synthetic for lab grown diamond.

• Diamond giant De Beers has seen its stockpile reach $2 billion, the biggest since the 2008 financial crisis, according to the Financial Times. “It’s been a bad year for rough diamond sales.”

Waning demand for natural diamonds has helped lift De Beers’s inventory to $2 billion, the most since the 2008 financial crash, according to the Financial Times.


In fact, the value of the diamond giant’s stockpile has been stuck around $2 billion for much of 2024, the report said.

Augmont launches spot trading in lab-grown diamonds​

Augmont, which claims to be the largest gold trading platform in the country, has added spot trading in lab-grown diamonds, which will enable buyers and sellers trade with transparency and better price discovery.

The platform, which has been in operations for the past 17 years in the precious metals space, caters to more than 5,000 jewellers across the country, it claimed in a statement Tuesday.

This addition represents an evolution of diamond trading infrastructure, particularly as the country maintains its position as the world's largest diamond cutting and polishing destination.

Belgian diamond trade is recording ‘catastrophic’ figures, warns National Bank​

According to the National Bank of Belgium (NBB), the diamond trade in the country is recording ‘catastrophic’ figures. In a new analysis, the National Bank points out several reasons for this collapse, including the relocation of diamond processing to India and the consequences of the war between Russia and Ukraine.

Belgian diamond imports and exports have been in decline for several years. The National Bank revealed that while diamond imports and exports were still worth about 15 billion euros in 2014, they were worth just 8.5 billion euros in 2023, a reduction of almost half. The share of diamonds in the total trade has fallen from more than 4 per cent to less than 2 percent in the space of almost ten years, and the figures for 2024 show no sign of improvement.

It's furthermore worrying that there has not been a single month since the beginning of 2023 in which diamond trading has recorded a positive growth rate compared with the corresponding month of the previous year. The National Bank also presented specific figures about the first nine months of this year: imports of precious metals and gemstones fell by 22.8 per cent, exports by 26 per cent.
