Singaporean English Is Almost Impossible for Foreigners to Correctly Pick Up

While this might sound like broken English, it is an example of Singlish, the highly complicated English creole spoken in Singapore. Its staccato, off-grammar patois is the subject of much bemusement for visitors to the country, and it’s almost impossible for outsiders to imitate.

“Singlish is easy to learn, but hard to execute,” says Sai Pogaru, who moved to Singapore in 2001 and is now a citizen. “There is a certain flair to the language/accent. It actually requires lots of practice to sound authentic.”

Singlish is not just one creole: it’s an amalgamation of many different Southeast Asian dialects and pidgins all rolled up into one. If you haven’t heard it, the video below offers a humorous Singlish voiceover for Disney’s Beauty and the Beast.

Singlish is a microcosm of what Singapore is all about ie not being bothered about doing anything well and taking short cuts wherever possible.

Singlish is distinctly unique and should be respected. Just like you don’t tell chinks not to speak Hokkien or Americans to drop their accent.

This book took me 2 days to complete my reading and I gave this book a thumbs up. It drew my attention with the use of value investing quotes and real live stories by each of the Value investors. The first story about a value investing bootcamp graduate, Angel Hsu who lost $20,000 reminded me of my bad stock trading experience back in 2009. Angel had learnt from her mistake and become a savvy value investor after attended Value Investing Bootcamp.

I lost more than triple of Angel’s loss due to greed and over leveraging on contract for difference (CFD) around the same time back in 2009. If you are new to stock investing, I highly recommend you to read and own “The Secrets of Value Investors”. It will only do you no harm and to provide you tons of benefits

Angel is a biomedical researcher, graduated in 2015 with a Masters degree in Science (specialising in Public Health researches) from National University of Singapore. She is a core investment researcher at Value Investing College and a VIC trainer with Chinese as the medium of instruction. VIC is a programme endorsed by Mary Buffett and is receiving her continuous support.

Angel is proficient in research and hence transfers this skill to enhance her investment returns. She has been helping people around her to achieve financial freedom together with her. She has been featured on The Newpaper in the article entitled “Break up was Wake-up Call” in December 2016. She shared about her stories that led her to have strong belief in women empowerment. Also, having similar beliefs with Mary Buffett (who enlightened her to help more women), she gladly shared her experiences in the hope to help women around her to be financially independent.

Having attended advanced options course (Options Mastery Programme) in December 2015, Angel has invested in multiple investment vehicle to diversify her risks: US stock market (US fundamentally strong companies, China ETF, Emerging market ETF), Singapore stock market (for dividend generating stocks), and US property development. To Angel, the best investment that she has given herself is financial literacy.
