KUALA LUMPUR: A gang of bungling kidnappers panicked when they realised they had abducted the wrong victim and decided to reduce their ransom demand from RM3 million to RM7,000 during five days of negotiations.
They had initially thought that the victim, a 15-year-old boy, was the son of the owner of a popular restaurant in Taman Midah, Cheras.
They discovered later that the victim's father was just the manager of the restaurant who only earned RM2,500 a month.
When the ransom amount was agreed upon, they demanded that the money be credited into the account of one of the suspects.
Police, who were closely monitoring the case, then sprang into action and nabbed five suspects, including a couple, in Butterworth, Penang and Batu Caves, Selangor on Sunday.
The boy was kidnapped in front of the restaurant about 1pm on Oct 7.
He was grabbed and bundled into a Proton Saga and taken to a flat in Taman Bagan, Butterworth where he was held captive for five days.
Police made their move on Sunday after the victim's father banked in the ransom.
Kuala Lumpur CID chief Datuk Ku Chin Wah said two of the suspects were Indian nationals. One of the suspects was an employee at the restaurant.
The suspects, aged between 25 and 46, were remanded for a week to facilitate investigations.
