'Slower growth means fewer job opportunities'
IF THE Government came across as if it were pursuing only economic growth, it was because it thought it was important to bring wages to people's pockets, in order for the country to grow and catch up with other countries, National Development Minister Khaw Boon Wan said yesterday.
'But now we get the message that we don't want so much growth, that we are prepared to accept slower growth,' he said, referring to criticism heard during the recent General Election.
To a youthful audience yesterday afternoon, he explained that slower growth means fewer job opportunities for them.
'It means starting pay also comes down. That is what it means.'
The Sembawang GRC MP was addressing 350 young people at the Sembawang GRC Youth Executive Committee's policy forum, held at Woodlands Community Club, for young people to discuss youth career challenges. Local community scholarships and bursaries were also given out.
Asked how young Singaporeans could be equipped to compete locally and globally, he noted that all competition today is global, but that young people here have greater opportunities and resources in a broader range of fields than ever.
He cited, for example, the famed Culinary Institute of America's degree course tie-up with Temasek Polytechnic, and the growing crop of schools that offer computer graphics and game design.
