'Slower growth means fewer job opportunities'

IF THE Government came across as if it were pursuing only economic growth, it was because it thought it was important to bring wages to people's pockets, in order for the country to grow and catch up with other countries, National Development Minister Khaw Boon Wan said yesterday.

'But now we get the message that we don't want so much growth, that we are prepared to accept slower growth,' he said, referring to criticism heard during the recent General Election.

To a youthful audience yesterday afternoon, he explained that slower growth means fewer job opportunities for them.

'It means starting pay also comes down. That is what it means.'

The Sembawang GRC MP was addressing 350 young people at the Sembawang GRC Youth Executive Committee's policy forum, held at Woodlands Community Club, for young people to discuss youth career challenges. Local community scholarships and bursaries were also given out.

Asked how young Singaporeans could be equipped to compete locally and globally, he noted that all competition today is global, but that young people here have greater opportunities and resources in a broader range of fields than ever.

He cited, for example, the famed Culinary Institute of America's degree course tie-up with Temasek Polytechnic, and the growing crop of schools that offer computer graphics and game design.

Talk rots. The high paying jobs never went to Singaporeans and most jobs do not go to Singapore. So lesser jobs mean nothing. Khaw, you are heading to the level of amoeba in the wheel of recarnation.

Making an attempt to wash youngster brains with threat. Since when did Singaporeans salaries gone up? and how many Singaporeans remain jobless? Can he ask MOM for more informations to substantiate his claims? If not, Khaw Boon Wan better Shut the fuck up!

Speak for yourself, loser.

The old policies benefited all except the losers. Let the non-losers feel a bit of pain, before the next elections they'll be crying out for the losers to be told to fuck off.

Hey Mr Khaw,

Why are you stirring a hornet's nest? Singaporeans are already reeling from the heat of too many foreign bodies in the workplace, MRT trains, buses, shopping malls, leisure parks etc. Honestly, tell me how many of them had created jobs for Singaporeans. Foreigners set shop here but employ only their own kind. They bring in their own countrymen on S-Pass, Professional Pass etc. There is a minimum salary to be paid. For instance, S-Pass holders eg chefs, skilled technicians etc must be paid a minimum salary of $1,800/-. However, the FT will be paid only around $800/- even though he will acknowledge in writing receiving more than $1,800/-. This is because, to the FT, $800/- is a heavenly amount as back home in his shit-hole country, he can never smell this amount. The dishonest employer pockets the difference. The result is that Singaporeans are screwed up as their jobs are usurped by the low wage seeking FTs. If you are not aware of this practice ask the relevant investigators to probe.

Can someone please explain to Minister that we are not unhappy about economic growth or too many jobs. We are unhappy that COSTS are going up FASTER than wages.

So either you bring WAGES UPWARDS VERY FAST for SINGAPOREANS. Or you bring COSTS DOWN VERY FAST.

Simple what.

A very good example would be the IRs (CASINO). The promise was that the casinos would bring in tons of jobs... And in the end, what do we see? The majority of jobs went to FTs like pinoy, ah tiongs, ah nehs... And the reason? Oh, cannot find singaporeans to do the job... Thats just terrible to hear. The reason why casinos are tolerated in other places is because you get jobs for the locals. We are the worlds first casinos to employ more FTs than locals....

So don't give me shit about less jobs because of less foreigners. For every job created by FT (tissue seller, table wiper, toilet cleaner, social escort), 10 jobs are taken away (teachers, managers, IT professionals, bankers, even doctors).

Here is a big fuck you and stop trying to fool us with your 2nd rate malaysian logic.

Khaw is missing the point or is being disingenuous. Nobody in his right mind is asking for slower growth. The first thing on their mind is job opportunities. They just feel that govt policy is of faster growth via cheap labour is not the answer. If there is a possibility of having slower growth to re-design our model that will allow quality job creation for citizens so be it.

This reminds me of his $8 bypass which till today no one has been able to explain.

Of all the Ministers, he seems more responsive but comments like these are not helpful.

$8 bypass is a joke. Take cab to the hospital already more than $8. lol

We want growth that creates more jobs for locals (and not foreigners).

If growth means PAP version whereby almost all the jobs go to foreigners and caused property prices to be unaffordable to locals and lack of places in educational institutions for citizens, I rather have slower growth.

If slower growth means all the jobs go to locals and a reduction in the number of foreigners, I'm prepared to take the pain.

Let the the PAP know, no pain means no gain.Lets take the bitter medicine of slower growth so that the absolute number of PRC's,Indian FT's and Pinoys are reduced and most job goes to locals.

Let the PAP give us some figures for accountability-for every 0.1% drop in growth rates, how many PRC's, Indian FT's and Pinoys will be sent packing and how many % more jobs will go to locals compared to their pet foreigners/PR's.
