Just 4 mins & commuter learns his wallet is safe
August 02, 2009
HE RECEIVED a call from his cab company informing him that a customer had left his wallet in his taxi.
There was almost $9,000 in it.
But Mr Wee Woon Kuan, 55, a ComfortDelgro relief driver, never once thought about keeping the money.
At 8.20pm on 23 Jul, Mr Anthony Tay, 53, an embalmer, had boarded Mr Wee's taxi at Kallang Bahru. He alighted at People's Park Complex in Chinatown.
But it was only 25 minutes later that he realised his wallet, which contained $8,954, was missing. He suspected that he probably left it in the taxi.
He called ComfortDelgro's customer contact centre.
The centre managed to trace Mr Wee's taxi through details such as the time of the trip, fare and the pick-up and drop-off points.
When the centre contacted Mr Wee, he had two passengers - an elderly couple - in his taxi. They passed him Mr Tay's wallet after they found it in the back seat.
Said Mr Tay: 'In less than four minutes, I received good news from ComfortDelGro (that my wallet had been found). I was really relieved when they found it.'
That day, Mr Wee had planned to remit $8,000 to his friend who was overseas.
At about 9.20pm, Mr Wee drove from Tiong Poh Road in Tiong Bahru to People's Park Complex to return the wallet to Mr Tay.
Mr Tay said: 'It's very honest of (Mr Wee) to return the money to me. It is rare to come across people who are not tempted by such a a large amount.'
Mr Tay is considering nominating Mr Wee for the Singapore Tourism Board's Singapore Experience Awards 2009. But the modest Mr Wee, who has been driving a taxi for eight years, insisted what he did was 'the right thing to do'.
'We service people cannot take what's not ours,' he said.
In 2005, Mr Wee had also returned a wallet to a customer. He found out who the owner was by checking the identity card inside.
Said Ms Tammy Tan, ComfortDelGro's group corporate communications officer: 'This is the fifth case this year where our cabbies have returned large sums of money or valuables.
'In this latest case, (Mr) Wee acted quickly and managed to retrieve the wallet. We also thank the passengers who were on board (Mr) Wee's taxi at the time for helping to find the wallet.'
