Ms Gillard laughed off the sandwich attack during a visit to Lyneham High School in Canberra this morning. "They must have thought I was hungry," she later told reporters.
The prime minister was walking into the school library when an unidentified student threw a white bread and salami sandwich at her.
Ms Gillard was visiting the school to announce that the Australian Capital Territory had decided to sign up to the Government's controversial Gonski education reforms that not all Australian states have accepted.
Earlier this month, a Brisbane student was suspended when he was blamed for throwing a vegemite sandwich at the prime minister.
The incident gained international coverage after the student blamed for throwing the sandwich, Kyle Thomson, denied responsibility, alleging a second thrower was involved.
Thomson, who was described as "no angel", was suspended from school for 15 days.
The Labor government and Ms Gillard are facing a landslide defeat at the next national election in September.
