Judge of Appeal raises serial cheat's jail sentence

SINGAPORE: A Judge of Appeal has increased a serial cheat's 10-month jail sentence to 15 months, after the Public Prosecutor successfully appealed against the initial sentence.
Syamsul Hilal Ismail cheated about 60 victims into paying him a total of S$6,175 to rent vehicles over the Hari Raya period last year.
The 29-year-old had used the Internet to advertise his fake services.
After the victims had paid him, they could not find the cars or contact him.
While out on police bail, Syamsul again posted on the Internet that he could give out loans to low-income earners.
Two women, aged 43 and 20, were duped into transferring S$1,000 each into his bank account as upfront fees or interest for loans.
On Wednesday, Justice Chao Hick Tin agreed with the prosecution to deter like-minded people so that they would not use the Internet to further their illegal activities.
He allowed the appeal and raised Syamsul Hilal's jail sentence to 15 months.
