JOHOR BARU: Police have nabbed five men in connection with armed robberies at two copper-based manufacturing plants in Johor last week. They retrieved five tonnes of copper sheets worth about RM150,000 on Nov 26 and about RM200,000 worth of copper wire in the other case on Nov 28.
Johor police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff said in the first case at a copper factory in Nusa Cemerlang, near Gelang Patah, three men were detained in connection with an armed robbery there. The suspects were nabbed after they stormed the factory grounds and tied up several workers.
“A security company was alerted about the suspicious loading activities at the facory and moved in to nab the thieves as the suspects were leaving the factory,” said DCP Mokhtar, adding that police arrived shortly after that and took custody of the three intruders. DCP Mohd Mokhtar said two of the suspects had previous drug-related offences.
In the other armed robbery case, police arrested two men at a factory manufacturing copper wiring at the Bandar Penawar industrial area. He said the two men, with three others still at large, entered the factory at about 12.40am on Sunday and slashed a security guard. They then tied him up. They loaded about RM200,000 worth of copper wire into a stolen lorry and escaped.
DCP Mohd Mokhtar said police set up roadblocks in the area and about an hour later located the stolen lorry with the loot along Jalan Sungai Tuan She, near Tanjung Sedili. “Two men in the lorry attempted to flee but our K-9 unit caught them near the beach. Police also retrieved two parangs, a CCTV camera and several tools used by the suspects.
