HONG KONG -- Hong Kong police on Tuesday confirmed that Agnes Chow, the prominent Hong Kong pro-democracy activist now living in self-exile in Canada, is officially wanted for jumping bail and failing to report to authorities by the end of last year. Chow was an iconic figure during the protests in 2019 against a Hong Kong extradition bill. She was sentenced to 10 months in jail for participating in an unauthorized assembly during the protest.
She was permitted to leave Hong Kong to pursue studies in Toronto, under the condition that she would return to the city and report to police on Dec. 28. But Chow announced in December that she would not go back due to the current situation in Hong Kong and threats to her safety, including her physical and mental health.
The city's Chief Executive John Lee said in a separate press conference that she "will be pursued for life." He even labeled Chow a "liar" and a "hypocrite," unusually harsh words for a high-ranking politician to use in an open setting.
