SINGAPORE - An unemployed man was jailed five weeks on Friday (July 24) for throwing cooking appliances out of his eighth-floor kitchen window.

A court heard that Wong Chee-Siong, 32, hurled a variety of kitchen equipment out of his Yishun flat window on May 13 at around 5.30pm. They included a cooking pan, a steamboat, a thermo pot and the inner pot of a rice cooker.

The Straits Times understands that he was upset because his mother, with whom he lives, had not acceded to his request for $200.

According to a Mandatory Treatment Order report, Wong had previously been diagnosed with schizophrenia but was not suffering a relapse at the time of the offence.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Rajiv Rai said that Wong had thrown the items "out of anger".

For rashly endangering the lives and safety of others, Wong could have been jailed up to six months, fined up to $2,500, or both.
