Looks like we are facing a 2 faced government.

Just spotted a public bus with a huge "Hire on Merit" advertisement on its side. Plus www.fairemployment.sg stuck to it.

"Hire on Merit" is now a euphemism not to put a Singaporean ahead of a foreigner.

Wait till the next election.

Frankly, if given a choice I would rather employ a hard working , go getting foreigners than a whining singpaporeans.

i want to hire singapore fresh grad...really

but $55,000 a year a bit steep for me, so much as i really wan to, i hired a foreigner instead. in fact i hired 5.

Be grateful that 66% Sporns have no issue with it. At least till now.

Single biggest determinant is cost, while merit actually went out the door years ago. Thats why you see bad service. Something I understand if you are owner operator and it will be silly to pay more and get screwed by your competitors unless you can create and milk a niche market.

I have no issue if you are like "Hooters" at Clarke Quay, an exception. They hire locals and foreigners but all very hardworking. Even the guys. They also speak well. Just drop by and spend 30 minutes have a beer during peak period and watch. Very responsive service staff.

Another phenomenon usually seen in big organisations is hiring along ethnic/nationality/network/family lines. Job is offered to fellow Aussies, Brits, Indians and long legged SPGs. Take the new head of NUS Business School. Wife given a job as lecturer in NUS as part of the deal. Something that was taboo in the past. Philip Yeo allowed this in A*star and it opened the flood gates.

I hire both Local and foreigners.

The Foreigners are hard working and appreciate the chance given to him to work here, they are very cooperative and willing to come back on weekends if I need them to.

The local on the other hand, is late 40s early 50s, 2 of the guys I hire them when they got retrenched.

One I gave him a manager post and the other a supervisor post, both earning higher then average pay.

I wanted to do my part to help the locals that got retrenched, both of them formally work for big foreign company.

At first they are appreciative but a later, start to play politics, deliberately delay delivery, did not cooperate, and all kinds of attitude problem and come to work with black face.

Really disappointing. If I have to let people go, I'll keep the foreigners.

This may also show that you've have a problem with your management skills.

Typical, it's always other people's fault.

I don't manage it, I hire people to do it, I only step in when I see a problem.

The truth is not very pleasant sometime, from your statement, you sounded exactly like that type of local that I've hired.

I will continue to hire locals, not all are bad.
Recently a 63yo told me he is very board at home, wore up at 5, walk the dog, exercise and have breakfast, look at the clock only 10am, wife also ask him to get out of the house and do something.

He want to come help me for free to pass time.

I gave him some small project but paid him for his time.

He is still very fit but for a 63 yo guy to look for job, is near to impossibel in SG.

You are a good man. You definately create good karma. We reap what we sow.:)

Last friday I went to Robinson. Saw an item costs $110 and like it very much. But came a polite pinoy lady trying to explain everything about the product to me. I was appreciative but since Robinson did not recruit local employee, I walked away not buying anything. I do not support employers who employ foreigners. That is me doing a small part for my countrymen.

Way to go. Buying from such companies would only make the likes of GKY's justify replacing Sporns with FTrash.

Similarly for restaurants if I see a China waitress or India Waiter coming torwards me, I will just wave them away and not patronise the food there. I used to be a fan of Jack place but when I saw they employ pinoy, I am not longer their regular customers....that applies to cinema. If I were to call the govt dept and hear a foreigner over the phone, I will give him hell as a customer.

Bro, Robinsons, Mark and Spencers, Takashimaya, are all foreign owned. Asking them to hire locals first is like slapping their own face. Singaporeans are too pampered to do sales assistant job. complaining that they have to stand the whole day.
By the way, do you have a FT maid?

Isn't this what u're doing?

Look within first and see your own mistakes.

Look at all your previous post, you are the mother of all finger pointer, against now may solutions and creative and constructive suggestions?

I dare to admit my mistakes and apologize to my subordinate, have you done the same before?

Einfield,

it's tough being an employer in SG.

At the next elections, we will all "vote on merit".
I suspect some pappies may lose their seats.

No, I don't have a Foreign maid. But when you are in local territory whether as individual or company, you should follow local laws and pro locals too.
