SINGAPORE: An 85-year-old man will be charged in court on 26 February 2025 for allegedly publishing an online post with the deliberate intent to wound the religious feelings of Muslims.
The charge stems from a Facebook post he made on 21 April 2021, which contained offensive remarks about Islam.
According to the Police, reports were lodged on 29 and 30 June 2021 regarding posts on the man’s Facebook account. Investigations revealed that he had re-posted screenshots of offensive remarks about Islam, originally made five years earlier.
During the course of the investigation, the man left Singapore in January 2022. He only returned in October 2024, after which legal proceedings resumed.
He will be charged under section 298 of the Penal Code, which criminalises acts done with deliberate intent to wound the racial or religious feelings of any person.
If found guilty, he faces a maximum sentence of three years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both.
The Police emphasised that they take a serious view of actions that threaten racial and religious harmony in Singapore.
They reiterated that individuals who make remarks or act in a manner that could incite ill-will or hostility between different racial or religious groups will face firm action
