Jetstar toys with Tiger and keeps 7 jets in reserve
December 10, 2009 – 9:06 am, by Ben Sandilands
Back to mystery jets rather than mysterious lights, Jetstar has gone all out after Tiger with an extra seven jets in waiting to use against it in Asia or Australia after re-announcing its 2010 fleet expansion plans this morning.
The message to Tiger is clearly ‘go away’. Jetstar’s announcement doesn’t account for seven out of the 15 Airbus A320 family of jets its adds to its total fleet this year, with five being added to Australian domestic routes and three assigned to its 49% owned Jetstar Asia operation based in Singapore.
This table (below) summarises the Australian expansion, which might be reasonably termed Jetstar’s best guess as to where Tiger is going to add domestic services in the same period.
The growth in Jetstar, and its scheduling has in recent months made it more available to Qantas customers on the Melbourne-Sydney Cityflyer route, and shows that far from being over, as group CEO Alan Joyce claims, the ‘Jetstarisation’ of the Qantas operation continues apace.
There is a clear message in these moves to Tiger and Qantas, namely that what makes the best profits grows, and what falls behind withers.
