YOG success depends on everyone

Singapore, July 22, 2010- AN INCREASE in visitor numbers is anticipated next month when Singapore celebrates its 45th birthday, and when the inaugural Youth Olympic Games (YOG) take place from Aug 14-26.

Even though the Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee and various agencies have put in much effort to ensure the success of the Games, Singaporeans also play an important role in making our foreign guests feel at home.

Banners and posters welcoming overseas athletes and officials should be put up at strategic locations which the foreigners are likely to visit.

It is heartening that some schools in the heartland are doing this. Service staff in hotels, eateries and retail outlets, and public- transport staff should be reminded to be helpful and courteous, and to be prepared to go the extra mile.

This will certainly enhance Singapore's image as a tourist paradise.

Being selected to stage the inaugural YOG is a once-in-a-lifetime honour, and it is our collective responsibility to make it an event that is not only memorable for us, but also for visitors from all over the world.

Dear Jeffrey,

When the PAP deals with Sinkees, they always talk dollars and cents. When good things happen, the PAP is always the first to take the credit. When things go wrong, the PAP blames god, blames external factors, blames Sinkees, basically blames everybody else except themselves.

Similarly, now you guarantee Sinkees what benefits they will receive directly by supporting the YOG first before talking cock.

Don't talk crap like "honour" and "tourist paradise" because how much benefits arising from these get filtered down to Sinkees? The only direct beneficiaries are the PAP and rich bosses. As if businesse are not already suffering losses because of the YOG.

In addition, what collective responsibility are you talking about when the PAP takes care of foreigners more than Sinkees?

Finally, who are you, Mr. Jeffrey Law, to exhort Sinkees to bend over backwards for the YOG? With all due respect, you do not command enough respect and moral authority to persuade Sinkees.

Dear Jeffrey,

Honestly i don't give a fuck about YOG. Its just a big hoo haa for the foreigners to come here, have a good time (probably good fuck) and leave us to foot the bill.

You really think they will spend a few billion dollars to boost the economy? Even if they do, what does it mean for me, as an average Singaporean?

You wanna talk dollars and cents? Sure, inflation last year was around 4% (it could be 5%). Our government projected pay increase of 3% per annum (30% in 10 years = 3 % per year).

Tell me, how can I benefit from this YOG or GOY or YG-fuck if I am, net, pay decrease of 1%. This against the backdrop of our economy is the best in the world at 15% GDP growth.

Unless my eyes are clouded or zip zhui by the latest flood...I fail to see what benefit YOG have for us. Donch you forget, we exceeded the budget by few hundred millions. Where this money coming from? Are we expecting a GST increase next budget to offset this amount?

How much aid can this given to poor and needy family? Must we really fight and win over Moscow to host this comedy event?

Already the lesson from F1 tells us, it is not neccessary beneficial against the cost of road closures and crowd staying away.

We are not like China, we need not host and spend mega-bucks to host an event to show case ourselves. And to be precise, its not a megaevent...its a stupid spin off shoot mooted by our leaders to IOC. This is nothing compared to Olympics.

>Singaporeans also play an important role in making our foreign guests feel at home.

The ah pek at Geylang, Joo Chiat & Chinatown have done that for a very long time already!..ask all the China Mei's Mei's....if they feel at home?

inflation last year was around 4% (it could be 5%).

10 kg rice selling $26 while a year's ago $16, only 4% or 5%?

For YOG to be successful, Singapore pools must start betting odds of the Games!
