JB crime index down, but it’s not enough

JOHOR BARU: The overall crime index in the city has dropped by 24.5% but more need to be done to shed Johor Baru’s crime-prone image. Mentri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman said although crime had generally dropped, it was a challenge to rid the city of the stigma. “We are located close to other countries and sometimes their media labels Johor Baru as an unsafe city,” he said during an official visit to the Johor Baru South police district headquarters yesterday.

He said the only way to counter it was to continue lowering the crime index. “The police have already done a good job by lowering street crime by a massive 54.8% and this surpasses the National Key Result Area (NKRA) target,’’ he added. Ghani said the Johor Baru South police district had been given 206 more men for various duties.

“Currently, the police district has 1,212 men who have been conducting police beats, patrols in MPVs and on motorcycles, and the special Ninja Squad to counter street crimes,” he said. Abdul Ghani said one way to counter crimes was to focus on the drug addiction problem. “There is a relation between drugs and crime and we need to tackle this problem,” he said.
