Tarmugi not contesting in upcoming GE
SINGAPORE: The ruling People's Action Party (PAP) has announced its line-up for East Coast GRC in the upcoming General Election (GE).
The five-member PAP team will be led by Minister in the Prime Minister's Office, Lim Swee Say, who is moving from Holland-Bukit Timah GRC.
Mr Lim is taking over from Senior Minister S Jayakumar, who has confirmed that he will not be contesting in the coming GE.
Professor Jayakumar made the announcement when speaking to reporters at his constituency earlier Thursday.
Another new face in East Coast GRC will be Dr Mohd Maliki Osman.
This means the Senior Parliamentary Secretary for National Development will no longer stand in Sembawang GRC.
Staying in East Coast GRC are Transport Minister Raymond Lim, Mr Lee Yi Shyan and Ms Jessica Tan.
Professor Jayakumar also revealed that the other senior member of the East Coast GRC team who is stepping down is House Speaker Abdullah Tarmugi.
Both men said they are making way for new team members as part of a renewal process.
"Of course after 30 years you step down, it's quite an emotional experience because you've developed an attachment and liking for the place, little East Coast, and for the people. But I've been discussing this with the Prime Minister for some time. He and I strongly believe in self-renewal," said Professor Jayakumar.
For Mr Tarmugi, he said: "You can't help feeling sad (stepping down).....you've worked with the people for 27 years. It's virtually my family, my second family."
