U.S. Air Force officials said a 35-year-old airman from Monroe County was fatally stabbed near his military base in Japan.
A news release from the Air Force identified the the airman as Master Sgt. Nicholas Vollweiler of the Saylorsburg area.
The release said the airman was found unconscious at his off-base residence with multiple stab wounds. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
The Air Force said it's working with Japanese National Police to investigate the death.
"Master Sgt. Vollweiler was a truly valued Airmen of Team Yokota and he will be dearly missed by our community," said Col. Otis Jones, 374th Airlift Wing Commander. "His family, friends, fellow defenders, and all of the Yokota community are in our prayers during this heartbreaking time."
According to a report by Japan Today, a 27-year-old woman in police custody admitted to stabbing Vollweiler.
A post on the Yokota Air Base Facebook page said: "Losing a member of our team is hard for all of us so I ask that you look out for each other and provide a hand when needed, especially on this very important holiday weekend."

TOKYO
Police in Tokyo said Saturday they have arrested a 27-year-old woman on suspicion of killing an American airman in his 30s who was stationed at the U.S. military’s Yokota Air Base.
According to police, the suspect, Aria Saito, who lives in Koto Ward, has admitted to stabbing the man, with whom she was in a relationship, at his house in Tachikawa at around 8 p.m. Friday, Fuji TV reported. Police quoted her as saying that they had been quarreling because he wanted to break up with her.
Some friends of the victim, who were present, subdued Saito and called 110. Police rushed to the house and found the victim unconscious, bleeding from a stab wound to the right side of his neck. He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
A neighbor told police that prior to the incident, he heard a man and woman in the house loudly arguing.
The U.S. military issued a statement Saturday in which it said “a military member from the 374th Airlift Wing sustained serious injury and was pronounced dead at his off base residence [Friday] at approximately 8:42 p.m.” The statement did not give the victim’s name or age.
