Nikkei Chinese Net article on September 11, original title: Disassembling the competitiveness of DJI drones
In the field of drones, the Chinese manufacturer DJI has a global share of 70%. Through analysis of DJI's latest models, it is found that low cost and technical strength, which are only about half of competitors, are the source of competitiveness.
DJI has bases in 5 overseas countries and is a fast-growing emerging enterprise. Its drones range from professional to entry-level, in a wide range. The selected survey object this time is the latest model "Mavic Air 2" for aerial photography, etc. The price is about 80,000 yen, which is at a popular price. With the assistance of a professional company, Nikkei investigated the components of the drone. It turns out that the estimated cost of parts and components is $135. The cost ratio is only 20%, which is lower than 30%~35% of smart phones. An executive of a Japanese company stated that "to achieve the same performance, the cost of materials for Japanese companies will be twice the price of the complete machine." It can be seen that low cost is the source of DJI's competitiveness.
DJI's secret is to use parts that are easily purchased and used in products such as smartphones and personal computers for drones. Among about 230 types of parts and components, about 80% of them use general-purpose products in terms of monetary value. The camera uses high-end smart phone components, and the positioning system receiver is a component used in smart watches. The dedicated parts are only semiconductors that control the propeller. The high-priced parts exceeding $10 are only batteries and cameras.
Not only is the cost low, the UAV also has strong software technology. It can shoot 4K image quality during aerial photography, and it also has functions such as automatic tracking and avoiding obstacles. DJI continues to explore and constantly improve the software by actively launching new products. A Japanese drone developer praised, “(Chinese drones) were initially immature in flight control, but after 3 years it was impressive.” According to a survey conducted by Patent Result, a patent analysis agency, DJI has 185 valid patents in Japan (as of January 2019), which is more than three times the second place. This also confirms its high technical strength.
