Jailed: Man who committed burglary to pay loanshark
By Khushwant Singh
A JOBLESS man, who resorted to housebreaking to pay off a loanshark, was sentenced to seven months in jail. Selwyn Goh Wei Ren, 25, pleaded guilty on Thursday to breaking into an office at Jurong East Street 13 in the early hours of Dec 10 last year.
Using a screwdriver, he forced open the front door and stole $900 in cash, a laptop valued at $1,500 and 15 pawn tickets.
He sold the laptop for an unspecified amount and used the money he received and the $900 he stole to settle his outstanding debts. The pawn tickets were thrown away.
Although out of the clutches of the loanshark, Goh was troubled by his conscience.
He surrendered himself to police on Jan 4 this year and also confessed to committing an earlier housebreaking act. He had broken into the same office on Dec 3 and stole $1,220 in cash, a laptop valued at $2,000 and a $200 camera.
