MUAR: Two men were sentenced to life imprisonment and six strokes of rotan each after they were found guilty of possessing revolvers.

High Court judge Datuk Lau Bee Lan said the prosecution had proved the case beyond reasonable doubt.

He, however, acquitted them of causing the death of a police corporal and injuring a lance corporal. Businessman Kek Boon Leong, 43, of Taman Bukit Pelana, and Cheah Phee Shing, 31, a hawker, of Taman Murni, both of Batu Pahat, were alleged to have caused the death of Corporal Nik Manja Abdul Manap, 44, and injured Lance Corporal Mohd Razali Abu Bakar, 42.

The offences were alleged to have been committed at No. 1, Jalan 4A, Taman Sri Maharani, Jalan Haji Jaib here at 10.30pm on Aug 1, 2004. They were also charged with possessing revolvers at the same place and time.
The court was told that Nik Manja was killed during a shoot-out with the robbers while Razali took a bullet in his shoulder when they went to the robbery site at a contractor's house.

Kek was defended by G.F. Nelson and Cheah by Gobind Singh Deo. Deputy public prosecutors Umar Saifuddin Ja'afar and Mohd Ashrof Adrin Kamarul appeared for the prosecution.
