Jailed for hitting guard
By Khushwant Singh
A FISHMONGER, who would turn violent under the influence of alcohol, was jailed for a month for attacking a security guard last November at the guardhouse of the Dairy Farm Estate condominium. Lim Chwee Poh, 46, had previous convictions for threatening behaviour in 2001 and 2006. A district court heard on Thursday that security guard Rahim Mukkiri, 51, told Lim, who was a resident in the condo, that he should not be in the guardroom. Lim then punched and struck Mr Rahim with a metal key. The guard was not seriously injured.
Lim was arrested and an assessment by psychiatrists at the Institute of Mental Health revealed that he was alcohol dependent. He also pleaded guilty to stealing two ashtrays from the Sams Cottage Cafe along Dairy Farm Road on Dec 13, for which he was fined $500, or sentenced to a day in jail if he could not pay the fine. As his sentence was backdated to Dec 28 - the day he was remanded - Lim would probably be released on Thursday. He promised District Judge May Mesenas that he will sign up and attend the voluntary alcohol treatment programme offered by IMH.
