HE turned up in court dressed smartly in his navy uniform.
Perappu Thevar was hoping for leniency. Instead he was told that because he was a uniformed officer, his offence was graver.
Perappu, 23, had grabbed a police officer's baton and used it to hit the cop. The navy sergeant also hurled vulgarities at the officer.
On Thursday, Perappu's lawyer, Mr Ong Peng Boon, urged the court to be lenient. He said Perappu would lose his job if he was jailed.
But District Judge Lee Poh Choo said: 'This is an aggravating factor, not a mitigating factor. He's a uniformed officer and he beat up another uniformed officer.'
She jailed him four months after he pleaded guilty to one charge of voluntarily causing hurt to a public servant. Three other charges of behaving in a disorderly manner, voluntarily causing hurt to another public servant and using abusive words on a public servant were taken into consideration.
The court heard that two officers were sent to Boat Quay around 4.35am on 23 Nov last year, after the police received word that a large group of people were congregating and about to fight.
Commotion
When Corporal Alan Wong, 23, and Staff Sergeant Mohamed Fareeq, 26, arrived, they saw a commotion.
Perappu approached Cpl Wong and started arguing with him. It was not mentioned in court what the argument was about.
Perappu then began gesturing in an aggressive manner and inched closer to Cpl Wong, who told him not to proceed closer.
But Perappu ignored him.
When he saw Perappu getting more aggressive, Cpl Wong tried to restrain him by handcuffing him.
But he resisted and a scuffle broke out between them. Cpl Wong lost his balance, and that was when Perappu grabbed hold of his baton. He used it to hit Cpl Wong on his head and body twice.
Perappu also punched SSgt Mohamed Fareeq in his stomach and kicked his left leg.
He was subdued and arrested after other police officers arrived.
In his mitigation, Mr Ong said Perappu was under the influence of alcohol at the time.
He asked the judge to call for a probation report to assess if Perappu could be placed on probation.
But this was turned down. Judge Lee said: 'He took the baton from the police and beat up the police. (You know) how serious this can be?'
Perappu's mother and sisters were in court during his sentencing. His mother broke down when she heard that he was going to jail. They declined to comment when approached.
For voluntarily causing hurt to a public servant, he could have been jailed seven years and caned.
