MANILA, Philippines – A court in the Philippines has sentenced a Taiwanese man to 80 years in jail for possessing more than three kilos of illegal drugs. Judge Alejandro Bijasa ordered Hsieh Chang to serve two life terms and to pay a one million pesos ($22,000) fine. A life term is equivalent to 40 years.
Narcotics agents arrested Hsieh in a 2007 raid on his Manila apartment, where three kilos of ketamine and 108 grams of methamphetamine hydrochloride were found. In a decision released to media Thursday, the judge rejected Hsieh's argument that he was not liable because the drugs were not recovered from his person. He says Hsieh was proven to be renting the raided apartment. Hsieh's age and hometown were not available.
