SINGAPORE - A man who sent an intimate video of a woman to a Telegram group chat and to online personality Kurt Tay has been jailed.
On Jan 22, Augustus Wong Wen Loong, 41, was sentenced to 10 months and two weeks’ jail after he pleaded guilty to three charges of possessing and distributing an intimate recording, and for harassing a second woman.
Three other charges were taken into consideration for his sentencing.
The court heard that Wong knew the two victims through Tay, 42, whose real name is Tay Foo Wei.
Tay, who has been charged over distributing obscene material and sending threatening messages, is known for his antics including carrying a World Wrestling Entertainment belt and getting breast implants.
The identities of the women cannot be revealed due to a gag order.
Wong regularly interacted with the two women in a Telegram group chat, but was kicked out of it after he scolded some of the members, including one of the women.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Lim Yu Hui said Wong also created Telegram group chats to communicate with his “fans”, and to scold and insult his “haters”.
On Sept 6, 2023, Wong received an intimate recording of the first woman from an unknown person and forwarded it to Tay.
He also sent it to his Telegram group chat with about 70 members, and threatened to release the woman’s address in the chat.
When the woman joined the group chat, Wong hurled vulgarities and insults at her.
The woman later lodged a police report.
In October 2023, the second woman told the police that she was distressed about Wong’s comments about her in another Telegram group chat.
The woman joined the group chat, named “Kim Jeong Hoon FC”, which had about 220 members, after receiving an invitation link from a member.
She saw that Wong had posted disparaging remarks about her, and told him to delete the comments immediately.
Wong replied with vulgarities and insults instead.
Wong also falsely claimed the woman had scammed him. He told her to publicly apologise and make a video of herself slapping her own face five times.
DPP Lim said: “(Wong) posted the messages in the group chat as revenge as he was angry with (the woman) and her supporters.”
In mitigation, Wong, who did not have a lawyer, pleaded for leniency and added: “I would like to apologise for my mistake.”
This prompted Deputy Principal District Judge Luke Tan to ask: “Have you apologised to the victims?”
Wong replied: “I don’t know how to get into contact with them.”
Tay faces 11 charges in total. Ten of them are over distributing intimate images and videos of a woman without her consent.
According to court documents, Tay allegedly sent photos and videos of the woman performing a sex act to multiple Telegram groups and users on Oct 27, 2023.
Tay’s 11th charge of making threatening communication is over allegedly asking in a Telegram group chat on Oct 18, 2023, if anyone knew where to hire a killer, and said that he wanted someone to die. The messages included vulgarities.
Tay’s case is scheduled for a pre-trial conference on Jan 27.
