<!-- end left side bar --> <!-- story content : start --> AN UNEMPLOYED man who robbed a taxi driver of $150 was jailed for five years and ordered to be given a total of 18 strokes of the cane on Monday. Cheok Chin Chong, 41, had earlier admitted to robbing Mr Ismail Mohd Sidek, 46, of $150 while armed with a 13cm-long dagger at Sims Avenue, and having the weapon along Lorong 19 Geylang. A district court heard that Cheok left home for Geylang before midnight on Oct 17. When he arrived in Geylang and found he did not have enough money to spend, he decided to rob taxi drivers. He hailed Mr Ismail's cab and whipped out the dagger from his trouser pocket and demanded money. Frightened, Mr Ismail stopped the cab along the road side and pressed the cash box. Cheok grabbed about $150 and fled. He gambled away the money at the back lanes of Geylang. Cheok, who has a similar conviction, could have been jailed for up to 14 years and caned for armed robbery. For the offensive weapon charge, he could have been jailed for up to three years and given not less than six strokes.
