International superstar Jackie Chan donated his antique collection worth about S$100million to Singapore's fourth university which is estimated to start in 2011.


Chan's property agent in Singapore, Simon Kwan, verified the news to local press but is unable to certify how much the donations are worth.

Chan started collecting antique buildings 20 years ago, eight of them are old houses and old stages of the Ming and Qing dynasties with at least 200 years of history.

He had actually wanted to donate the structures to the Hong Kong government but they took too long in replying so Kwan suggested donating to Singapore instead.

Kwan also specially flew to Hong Kong to understand the artifacts before suggesting to the Singapore authorities. Chan finally decided to donate his antique collection to a Singapore new university which will open in 2011.

According to reports, the new university, which will be located at Upper Changi near the Singapore Expo, will offer degrees in Design and Construction, Engineering, Business and Information Technology course.

A bit suspicious. If indeed so valuable and desirable, why did the HK government hesitated and delayed. Could it be Jackie's looking for a rent-free junkyard to store some unwanted junks? Get an astronomical valuation and write off on his tax return for donation deduction?

It's wrong for the antique building worth about S$100million to come to Singapore.

It belongs to China. China is the rightful place for the antique building.

There have been many instances of potential recepients avoiding a decision or actually refusing such donations. Such donations require major maintenance costs such as security, expert maintenance and worst still value that cannot be realised.

Things like that are well known in the west, where previously well endowed aristocratic families expect the state to look after their family homes, castles, collection of antiques that are in bad shape etc. People have become wise to these things.

I am sure this is not going to go thru.

Generally Countries designate such buildings as a heritage by law and the existing owners must retain and maintain original condition at their own expense. These properties when sold on the open market carry deep discount value because of the high maintenance costs.

Families who previously who fought tooth and nail to preserve such building now mount legal challenges stop the "heritage" designation.

Jackie and his local agent must assume that we are bunch of idiots.

Well, finally, the secret is revealed. Jackie Chan is actually an undercover agent for the Opposition parties. The oppo plan is to have Jackie Chan donate $100 million and therefore embarass the Leegime into matching with a similar amount. This will be like tearing his remaining hair out for the very Kiam Lee Kuan Yew. How can the Lees allow a foreigner to come into the country that they control and thru his generosity, show up the Lees as cheap bastards? Whether this donation comes thru or not, the very fact that it is a real ernest donation will now force the Lee conglomerate into some action. Surely, there must still be some spare $ million lying around after the Temasek Debacle.
